Show me your HDTV Tankboy

Show me your HDTV Tankboy

Tankboy is fast turnaround, reality based television series for the international HDTV market.

Due to the extreme filming conditions of the show, the Next Generation in Destruction TV, we were presented with a lot of challenges.

Our first mission was to clean up the dialog. Each of the characters had their own radio mic, so we had dialogue tracks everywhere. And to make it worse, they were quite often all talking at once. It was like putting together a jigsaw puzzle against the clock.

And then, the hours of clean up work, to remove heavy background noises such As extremely loud vehicle engines, marauding Romans, intense explosions, supersonic rockets as well as the usual wind and cicadas.

Many international networks have stringent dialog level requirements so we had to ensure the final dialog had a constant level through out the show.

Our next mission, music and effects, required us to run through the music and effects tracks adding additional effects and music cues as we went.

Then the final Dolby Digital mix was output to HDcamSR and also to 5.1 compliant AC3 files for DVD release. A standard stereo DVD output was just not going to make the grade.

International HD delivery also required us to create all the Dialog, SFX and Music stems as part of the mix.

Having a full spec Dolby Digital ProTools suite with enough horse power to launch the space shuttle, enabled us to record all the deliverables (fullmix and stems in one pass), which saved an immense amount of time (and money for the client) on this project.

One of the big challengers for television is creating all the different deliverables that the networks and international sales require. As well as a 5.1 and Dolby stereo mix most international networks are also requiring M&E mix’s and splits for promo departments and reversioning. One international network requests 36 tracks (6 stem mixes, all in 5.1) in addition to the 2 full mixes.

Moving from stereo to 5.1 multiplies the number of tracks required by three, so it is easy for things to get out of hand. The standard D, M and E requires 18 tracks if they are all supplied in 5.1.

Thanks in part to the quality of the sound track, the Tankboy TV series has now sold worldwide and has been dubbed into a multitude of languages.

And in the words of Tankboy himself Mission Successful, we will be working with this sound team again for Tankboy Season 2, Hooooaaahhh.
