Short Films

As well as a steady raft of high-end commercials passing through the Digipost Audio suites, the first four months of 2008 also saw three New Zealand Film Commission funded short films through the DP audio rooms.

Short film mix days are fairly intense as with everything in the short film world, time and funds are short. In the mix I try to create a comfortable environment for people to get their projects completed without technology getting in the way. I also like to keep the process flexible enough so that directors and producers can keep their options open and get the chance to listen and think things through properly.

These three films were mixed in Dolby Digital for cinema. We also created Dolby Digital DVD and television versions of the sound mix.

This is Her

Passenger Films

This Is Her is a dialog driven story with narrator from start to finish. This made getting dynamics into the sound mix interesting as the level of the film was set by the narrator. We also remixed the Golden Horse song Why Don t I Feel for Dolby Digital. The process ended up being helped by the fact that the album had been mixed with pro-tools. We were supplied the original session files with all the plug-ins and automation data which loaded onto our pro-tools system giving us a great head start, especially as the song was made up of over 150 audio tracks.

The Road Out Of Town

The Cartel

The Road Out Of Town has quite an ambient feel about it, with very little dialog replacement (ADR). We wanted to create a dynamic mix with a sudden loud start to shake things up a-bit and set the tone. Over all this film called for a less is more approach to keep it real. We worked hard to create interesting textures and giving the sound field a wide, open and uncluttered feel.

Bridge

Resolution Films

Bridge is mostly set in one location and the entire dialog track was replaced (although I hope know-one would ever know) we worked really hard on getting the perspective right. Creating close and distant settings and making use of some fantastic convolution reverb technology that allows you to capture a sample of an acoustic space (in this case under and around a rail bridge) and apply that space to the recording.

The sound tracks on all three films were a collaborative effort with sound, music and pictures arriving from many different facilities (some of which are competitors in the commercial world). These films presented us with a great opportunity to work together and will led to more close working relationships for sound in the future.
